How Does The Polygraph Work?
The polygraph is like a recorder, except instead of recording sounds, the polygraph instrument will record physiological changes that occur in the examinee’s body as the polygraph examiner asks a series of test questions. As the examinee is questioned about a certain event or incident, the examiner records and monitors the relative changes in the examinee’s heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate and electro-dermo activities.

Today, polygraph tests are administered using digital computerized equipment. Polygraph Examinations are most often associated with criminal investigations but are also used in family matter such as infidelity, drug use, employee theft and pre-employment screening.

The polygraph Examination includes three phases: The pre-test which includes the examiner and examinee acquainting themselves with one another. The pre-test also allows the examiner to acquaint the examinee with the polygraph instrument and to reveal the exact questions that will be asked during the examination. The data is collected by the examiner after administering the polygraph examination. The final phase is the post test phase in which the data from the polygraph examination is reviewed with the examinee.

The polygraph examination is used by law enforcement agencies, prosecution and defense attorneys, as well as by companies and corporations. Research reveals that polygraph examinations have between a 90-95% accuracy rate. At Confidential Polygraph, we take our polygraph examinations very seriously. The examination results can potentially impact a persons employment, relationship, or the outcome of a civil or criminal matter. It is for this reason that all results from our polygraph examinations are submitted to a neutral polygraph examiner who is certified by the American Polygraph Association. This procedure, called Quality Control, assures the examinee that our polygraph results have been confirmed.

Polygraph examinations take between two and four hours, depending on the type of examination to be conducted. The estimated time period includes the client interview, in which the examiner obtains all pertinent information regarding the issue at hand. The time estimated will also include the pre-test interview where the examiner will review all the questions that will be asked during the examination. There is also a post exam discussion where the examiner will discuss the results of the examination.
